San Manuel Hosts Americans for Indian Opportunity

SMBMI Hosts Americans for Indian Opportunity

On August 29, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians hosted an Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO) event for 135 nonprofit partners and team members. The session, titled “Indian 101: Beyond Cultural Competency,” was led by AIO Executive Director Laura Harris, who unpacked stereotypes and bias of Indigenous people and dove into the workings of modern tribal governments.

Participants also learned about ancient cultures; the diversity of tribes in America; Native American influences on food, language and politics; and evolving nature of tribal relations with the U.S. government. The presentation aimed to build awareness, teach new perspectives, and discuss how to be a strong partner and ally to Native communities—all of which highlight San Manuel’s commitment to education and inspiring others to lead through education.
