The 5K That Makes A Difference

San Manuel Cares

More than 250 San Manuel Band of Mission Indians team members and Tribal Community members took part in the second annual 5K walk/run hosted by the SMBMI Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) advocacy group. The event—held April 28, 2024, at Cal State San Bernardino—brought awareness to the epidemic of violence and injustice Indigenous people face. Murder is the third highest cause of death among American Indian and Alaskan Native women, and 82% of Indigenous men are victims of violence in their lifetime.

This year’s event also raised funds for Ohkomi Forensics, an organization founded and led by Indigenous peoples to provide crucial services and advocacy for families and communities affected by the MMIP epidemic. In addition, a check presentation was held for last year’s event recipients: Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women and Strong Hearted Native Women's Coalition.
